i love Mad Men. i discovered it by accident in 2009: i had just finished High School, and i had a ton of free time, which i devoted mostly to drawing and television marathons. one day, AMC was airing a Mad Men marathon, so i thought “why not?.” i think this was the week before the premiere of season 3, so the marathon might’ve been most the episodes from season 2. regardless of how lost i was, and how much i missed from S1, i was hooked on the writing, and in love with the characters.
years later, i’m sitting here, eagerly anticipating the premiere of season six, which is (FINALLY) only hours away.
i just wanted to share how crazy i am about this show, and if you aren’t crazy about it too, you should Netflix it. it’s the best show on television (that’s a fact, not an opinion). here’s some doodles i’ve drawn, inspired by the show. -

initially, I was going to do something similar to last year’s Easter Bunny , but lately, I’ve been seeing these photos of Sara Fabel with lace-bunny ears, and when I thought about drawing an Easter bunny, I could think of nothing else. there are many other photos from that shoot, but the one that stood out to me the most is one where she’s smiling. I thought her smile was just adorable, the way her tooth stood out, and her pose and expression portrayed a playful side of her. it was cute, it was sexy, and I had to try my best to replicate that.
she photographs wonderfully in black and white, so translating it with pen and pencil was fun. her trademark eye makeup and signature tattoos helped indicate who she was, in case I didn’t do a good job on the portrait. overall , I think this drawing came out much better than the last time I tried drawing her, and with all the lovely photos of her that continue to flood the internet, I’m sure I’ll be attempting to draw her again and again.
pen, pencil, sharpie. -

Public Miley Cyrus Tinkerbell Portrait
for the second of my Urban Nymphs, I used a photo of Miley Cyrus from her recent Cosmopolitan magazine shoot. it was a great photo, where not only did she look gorgeous, but showcased her very expressive features and body language. in this photo she has a sort of a grumpy expression, which as I’ve mentioned before, is one of the things I adore about Tinkerbell, so why not have her play the part.
I drew her on a two foot long piece of paper in ballpoint and put her up. -

I already admitted to being a Pretty Little Liars fan a couple months ago, so I can go ahead and say that the idea for this drawing came while watching the show. I’ve drawn Tinkerbell many times throughout the years, usually just drawing random people and attaching wings. recently, I’ve started noticing Ashley Benson’s face and appreciating how expressive her face is, and I realized she’d make a great Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell (as she was in the Peter Pan movie, not those straight-to-video ones we have now) is a silent character who’s very emotive, through her body language and face. she’s also not very nice, which is something I like about Benson’s character on PLL- she can be sweet and kind at times, but also have that …attitude that is unique and sets her apart from the bubbly Disney Princess archetype. to sort of illustrate that, i gave her a needle- and had her hiding it behind her back, insinuating that she’s up to no good. I based this off a photo of Benson, but the face is only 1.5 x .75 inches, so it was pretty tough to go in there and get the likeness right (even with a .5 pencil) . next time I will draw on bigger paper, or zoom in a bit.
everything but her mascara was done in pencil.

Daredevil
-i know it’s something a lot of people want to forget, but on this day, a decade ago, Ben Affleck starred as Matt Murdock in “DareDevil”
personally, i thought the Affleck was great for the role. i dug the costume, thought the dark scenery was pretty neat, but yeah, the film was sub-par, to say the least. in order to commemorate the tenth anniversary, i drew this half-portrait of the title character. somewhere in my room, i have a crayon or pastel drawing i did of Daredevil when i was twelve, i’ll find it and take a pic, just because it’ll be interesting to compare, and further prove that nobody ‘naturally’ knows how to draw.
this one’s done in pen and pencil. -

TED sketches
another page in my sketchbook- this time i drew some face studies while watching Ted.
the first time i saw it, i couldn’t pause and rewind it- this time around, i got to really look at him and try to understand how they got so much expression using mainly his mouth and eyebrows. some of these came out pretty bad (you can tell which one my first one was) but i wasn’t using pencil, and i didn’t take longer than five minutes for each one.
if you haven’t already watched this movie, you MUST! it’s one of the best of the year -

“you’re born alone, you die alone, and this world drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts. But I never forget. I’m living like there’s no tomorrow… because there isn’t one.”
i drew this on 12/20 when there was nonstop talk about the apocalypse. i thought the quote that Jon Hamm’s character said in the first episode of Mad Men was rather fitting for the date.
it’s based on a photo of him that i saw online, done in pen, pencil, and Sharpie.
this is my favorite show, and i think this might be the first time i pay homage to one of the actors/characters in drawing. i need to change that. -
