The Incredible Hulk
I’ve really come to love these blank covers. I like pretending I’m Alex Ross when I’m drawing them. usually, I’ve had input from clients about what they want to see on the cover, but this is the first time I just went ahead and drew whatever I felt like drawing. what I wanted to draw was a rough and ugly break from pretty women and clean lines. I wanted something messy and monstrous, so I drew exactly that. initially, I was going to draw a hectic action scene of Hulk smashing, but when I saw the letters on the head of this cover, I fell in love with the ‘old movie title’ look it had. so I decided to make it look like an ad. I started by giving it a gritty, yellowed border, and then started planning the layout. of course Hulk had to be at the center, but what would go around him? for inspiration, I turned to classic comic covers, but I didn’t have to look for very long, since the most famous cover had everything I needed. like many old covers, it was filled with captions and exclamations to grab the reader’s attention. the ones for the first-ever issue of The Incredible Hulk (and even the title itself) suggested that he was a wonder, a mystery, a freak. this reminded me of King Kong, and the sensational carnival posters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. with that in mind, I designed this to look like it could be a mid-century horror movie, possibly an exhibit/attraction not for the weak of heart. I chose to model him after the Avengers Movie Hulk, since I felt that one looked the most monster-like, yet realistic. also because he looked most like the original Jack Kirby rendition. I chose not to color him, not only because it preserved the classic look, but also because this way, you could imagine green Hulk, Grey Hulk, Red Hulk, whoever you like most. I wanted to add some rock poster elements to the design as well, as reflected by the soundwaves and the Misfits-like font on the left. it’s done primarily in pen and Sharpie, with some pencil for his skin, and marker for the yellowed frame.
